If I had used a MAC format, this might not work.Īs for your question about how I know what I've been doing is a backup. It's just some extra insurance in case Time Machine fails or some physical disaster happens.

However I can also back any MAC files here as well. When you are done, you click the icon again to disconnect, and then it's connected on the MAC side once more.Īs it happens I did reformat the external drive as FAT32 since I knew the Quicken files are the most critical ones I have.

And printers and scanners and the ISight camera.well you get the idea. This works whether it's plugged into the hub or directly to the back of the IMAC. So you just click it and your virtual machine is connected. In XP running under Fusion, there are some icons at the bottom right of the screen under the task bar that you can click to connect or configure various things. I didn't quite understand everything you were trying to tell me, but as it happens, it's really simple if you just know where to look. Message was edited by: WoodyZ Removed comment about hub as I really meant to be talking about the Host as was obvious when explaining the filesystem requirements and direct access vs VMware Shared Folders or SMB/CIFS Share.

It is your responsibility to know what file/folders you need for any given product and if you don't know then contact the manufacture of the software in question. If you're not sure that that is really a backup then how are you sure whatever it is you've been doing otherwise is a backup as well? I'm not trying to be a smart-a$$ and I really mean it you need to be sure that whatever it is you're doing to backup User Data is a valid method and you should also be doing tests restores from time to time just to be absolutely sure that whatever backup your doing is valid and good.Īnyway if you copy files/folders from the Virtual Machine to the Mac and then from the Mac to the external drive providing there were no errors while copying then you should be fine providing the files/folders you're copying are in the the complete data necessary for a valid restore. I can copy the folder going to the MAC side and drag and dropping it from the Documents folder, but I'm not sure this is really a back up.

Note: There is software available to allow writing to an NTFS volume from OS X and or HFS+ from Windows if needed if the defaults are not suitable.

When connected to a Host they could be formatted HFS+ and then shared under OS X as a SMB/CIFS Share and then accessed from Windows or as a VMware Shared Folder and accessed from Windows. In order for Windows to have direct access the external USB drive it needs to be formatted NTFS or FAT32 and you would need to connect them directly to the Virtual Machine. It recognizes the printer and scanner but not external drives. Quicken or windows or the virtual machine (not sure which) doesn't see either of these drives when I plug them in to a UBS hub. Although I can back up files to the shared folder on the hard drive, I would also like to back up to an external drive and a flash drive from time to time.
